• This book is written from the third person point of view and in the past tense.
• In the Prologue, subtitled Early Spring, main character Alex Stern was holed up in Hutch House, a building reserved for members of Lethe House.
• Alex considered that the phrase "Death Conquers All," written prominently in the Lethe House guidelines, and thought of some of the violence she had lived through in the past several months.
• Alex thought of Dean Sandow's femur bone jutting through his leg and the smell of wild dogs in the Lethe House mansion.
• Looking at herself in the mirror, Alex lifted her shirt to reveal the scar and the deep wound where she had been bitten.
