Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine Papa's character, and how Philipps reveals his character traits. Characterization is the process an author uses to reveal a character's personality. Authors can use direct or indirect characterization to show readers a character's qualities.

Class Discussion: How does Philipps reveal Papa's attributes? How does using ConaLee's thoughts about him reveal who he is and the type of person he is? What does the relationship Papa has with ConaLee and her mother reveal about his character? What does his attitude toward Dearbhla indicate about him? How would you describe Papa and the type of person that Philipps reveals him to be?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group make a list of Papa's character traits. Then have members of each group discuss whether each trait is positive, neutral, or negative and whether they are external...
