Lesson 1 (from Pages 1 - 49)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Nell Zink’s contemporary satire, Nicotine. Students will research the author, read the first few pages, and analyze the exposition established in this opening scene. Nicotine follows the narrative of Penny Baker, a 23-year-old college graduate grappling with the death of her father. In the opening scene, however, the author offers exposition regarding Penny’s past and how her mother came to meet her father in Cartagena, Columbia, in 1985.
Lesson
Group Activity: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the first section of the novel involving the indigenous girl and the middle-aged American man when they meet in Columbia. This brief scene provides exposition (backstory) for the narrative. As a group, detail what information has been related: What is the setting? Who is present in the scene? What events take place?
