Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the point of view and writing style of the novel. The objective of this lesson will focus on the writing style of the novel.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: The novel begins in a first person voice, with the narrator introducing herself to the reader. The reader quickly discovers that the novel will take place in multiple time lines, not necessarily in a linear time line. Discuss these elements of the novel with students and ask students to discuss how these aspects of the novel might impede or encourage understanding of the plot.
2) Point of View: Define point of view. Ask students to discuss in an essay the different types of point of view and the chosen point of view of this novel. Ask students to use quotes from the novel to support their conclusions.
