As some students may not be familiar with the time period discussed in the book, this lesson will focus on research in order to build prerequisite knowledge for understanding Lewis' story.

Lesson

1. Writing assignment: Students will write a half-page journal discussing what they already know about World War II Italy and the subsequent time period.

2. Small groups: Students will divide into groups of 3 or 4 to complete research on Lewis' time period. Each group will compile a list of 5 facts about this era to share with the class.

3. Class discussion: What interesting facts did students learn about this period of history? What economic and social issues do students expect from the novel, based on the research assignment? What are the conditions like for Italy toward the end of World War II? What circumstances have led to this condition? What role do students expect Lewis to play...
