· The narrative of My Year Abroad comes from the first-person perspective of protagonist Tiller Bardmon, a 20-year-old college dropout, as he relates the story of his present circumstances and the history that brought him here.
· The narrative of this novel shifts chapter-by-chapter between the present-tense storyline and events from the past.
· In Chapter 1, Tiller begins his narrative in the present tense.
· He is living in a nondescript town which he will not name, “as that could be dicey for Val and her XL little boy, Victor Jr.” (10).
· Tiller goes on to describe the city, calling it “Stagno,” and saying that it serves its purpose as a place where he, his 30-something girlfriend Val, and her son, can live in relative anonymity...
