Lesson 1 (from Pages 1-46)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the beginning of My Dark Vanessa in order to identify the main characters, the setting, and any potential conflicts and themes the novel might contain.
The beginning of the novel introduces the reader to Vanessa, her teacher Jacob Strane, her parents, and former friend, Jenny. The reader is also introduced to Browick Preparatory School. The reader is introduced to themes involving sexual abuse, addiction, and denial, and the power of memory. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Vanessa’s conflicts with Strane and herself.
