Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 - 5)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the use of the hanged man at the beginning of the book and the significance of that event for Philip. The author begins the book with the story of Ambrose showing Philip a hanged man’s body when he was just a child. The hanged man is significant because du Maurier mentions him again at the end of the book after the entire tale has unfolded.

Class Discussion: What was the crime the hanged man committed? What does Ambrose have to say about his crime? Why does he show Philip the body? What impact does this event have on Philip?
Journal Entry: Write a journal entry in response to Philip’s seeing the body as a child. How do you feel about that? Do you understand why Ambrose showed it to him? What did you think of...
