Objective

My Brilliant Friend is a novel about friendship—humbling, raw, human friendship—amid the backdrop of a poor section of postwar Naples, Italy. The Prologue and first chapters open 60 years after the main timeline of the story, as Elena Greco, now mid-sixties and living in Turin, receives a call from the son of her best childhood friend to relate that his mother has gone missing. Objectives for this lesson include analyzing the narrative style and framing device for the novel, researching the contemporary setting of Turin, Italy, and discussing the relationship between Elena and Rino in the Prologue and Chapter 1.
