Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Part One)

Objective

Students will explore the setting of My Abandonment by learning about the unhoused living in America's public parks.

My Abandonment begins with Caroline and Father living in Forest Park, in Portland, Oregon. Although they see themselves as different from the rest of the unhoused, their situation is not fundamentally different from that of the others around them--in the park and in the city. This lesson is intended to help students understand the diversity of America's unhoused population, the prevalence of the unhoused living in public parks, and the specific news story that inspired My Abandonment.
