Section 1: Part One

• The book opens in the summer of 1999 with its 13-year-old narrator, Caroline, walking through the woods at night with Father.
• She notes that sticks can spring up and hit you when you are walking in the woods, and "There's nothing to do but keep walking, you have to be ready for everything" (3).
• They approach a salvage yard; they go through a hole in the fence and scavenge for metal to help support their roof.
• There is a nearby adult video store called Fat Cobra Video.
• Caroline's naïveté is evident when she notes that although Father has told her that it is a "snake store," she does not think that can be right (3).
