Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 100))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Jo Kaufman's relationship with her father, Ken Kaufman. Although Jo is a child in the 1950s and 1960s, when traditional gender roles were reinforced and normalized in America, Ken Kaufman defies some of those roles in his actions as an openly affectionate and tolerant father. Jo's refusal to play along with the behavior and decorum of what is expected of her as a girl in this era does not seem to trouble her father, although Jo's mother is at times disgusted with, and openly hostile to her. For these reasons, Jo comes to adore and respect her father.
