Objective
Students will consider the author's use of a first person narrator in Chapter 1.
Lesson
1) As a whole group students will brainstorm the effects of the first person narrator on the events of Chapter 1. Students will use evidence from the text to support their ideas, and contribute these to a whole class discussion.
2) In small groups, students will discuss why the author's use of first person narrator might be superior or inferior to using a different point of view in Motherless Brooklyn. What reasons might the author have for choosing first person?
3) In small groups, students will discuss how the story would be different if a different character had narrated it in first person.
4) Individually, students will write a one page narrative essay using the first person point of view, as the character of Frank.
