Lesson 1 (from Prologue, Chapters 1 through 5)

Objective

Mortal Fear is a book packed with suspense and mystery. The author spends a lot of time developing characters and introducing only pieces of information at a time that build into a full picture. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the characters in the story.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: Even though the reader does not know the killer's identity in the beginning of the story, who is he? What do we know about him? What do we know about Miles and Harper?

2. Groups: Divide the class into groups of three or four and discuss: Is it difficult to shape a character like the killer without being able to build a whole character profile in the beginning of the book? Why or why not?

3. Individual: Create a one-page character description of the killer, Harper, and Miles, based on what you have learned about them so...
