Lezek believes that Mort is not cut out to be in the horticulture field. Mort is bad to try and think about things and work problems out in his head. Lezek believes that if someone else takes Mort on as an apprentice then Mort will have a better chance of having a good career.
2. Describe what happens when Mort is waiting to become an apprentice.
Mort is waiting with the other boys and one by one they are all taken except Mort. Mort waits until almost midnight when Death appears and explains that he is looking for an apprentice. Mort's father can't quite understand that Death is in fact death and believes that his son is going to become an undertaker of some type.
