· The story opens with the Minister of Interior in a near empty marble room trying to decide which of the three suits laid out for him he should wear.
· The rest of the room is packed in boxes, waiting to be sent to Paris where the Minister is heading to join his wife and children.
· The Minister knows that his housekeepers will raid the boxes before they are shipped, and he is thankful that his favorite painting fits in his suit bag.
· The Minister is surprised at the sound of his own voice in the sparse room when he mutters, “So it goes” (1).
