The purpose of "Money: A Suicide Note" is to show how close John Self is to the edge, and how miserable his life is despite what appears to be overwhelming success. The novel serves to show how close a man can be to death and having the desire to die without being able to find peace.

John is disgruntled for various reasons, but one is his girlfriend Selina. She is being unfaithful on a regular basis, and she does not seem to mind hurting him. John is also hit up for money on a regular basis, and the actors and actresses around him constantly want more out of him, whether it is money or emotion.
