Lesson 1 (from September - October)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Tiffany D. Jackson’s young adult psychological thriller Monday’s Not Coming. Students will research the author, read the first few pages of the novel, and analyze the narrative style of the work. Monday’s Not Coming has a unique, nonlinear structure framed in several different timelines, each delineated by chapters referencing “The Before,” “The After,” etc. Another key aspect of the novel is the use of an unreliable narrator. This device further blurs the lines of reality versus fantasy and highlights the theme of memory.
Lesson
Group Activity: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the preface to September and the first couple of pages of September: “The Before.” Discuss how the story is related and what information has been related.
