Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)
Objective
Chapter 1--Throughout this chapter much of the conversation between the characters is interrupted by sounds and views from the outside world. This method of using external events interspersed with personal conversation in the book is an interesting technique that helps set the tone for the rest of the book. This lesson will discuss the purpose of using interruption in the book.
Lesson
1. Class Discussion: What are some ways that the conversation between these three characters is interrupted? Which character initiates the most interruptions in this chapter? What might these interruptions represent: daydreaming, immaturity, longing, or something else?
2. Group Discussion: Split the class into three groups and have each discuss the author's purpose for interrupting scenes throughout these conversations-- the piano playing, Ms. Giraud arguing with the child, Ms. Giraud reprimanding Anne. What might the author be telling the reader about these characters? What tone is she...
