· The novel opens in 1914 when Margery is ten years old.
· It is summer and Margery’s father calls her into his study, something he has been doing more often since her four brothers had gone to war.
· Her father’s eyes are described as “the kindest in the world” (3).
· Margery’s father opens a book called Incredible Creatures.
· The book consists of images of things like a man with a mermaid tail and a squirrel with wings.
· Margery asks her father if these things are real and he says that he is “comforted…by the thought of all we do not know, which is nearly everything” (4).
· Her father points out a tiny beetle and describes the parts of its body: head, thorax...
