Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to familiarize themselves with the author’s background and make inferences about why Jerry Spinelli decided to write this novel.

Class Discussion: Who is the author of Milkweed? Where is he from? What does he do for a living? What is he known for? What events in his life may have inspired him to cover the topics and themes covered in the book? What about the author’s background or personal interests compelled him to write a novel set during the Holocaust?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to include information that reflects some of the book's themes. Regroup and ask students to share their facts, making sure to keep...
