This character is the novel’s protagonist and narrator. This character has a wry sense of humor and mocks nearly every facet of the totalitarian society in which she lives. This character has many siblings and in-laws, though her relationship with each sibling and brother-in-law is markedly different than any other. For example, this character has one brother-in-law whom she views as a friend, while another, whom she hates, has been sexually harassing her since she reached the age of 12. This character is eventually revealed to be looking back at the events featured within the body of the narrative.

This character is a paramilitary officer who relentlessly pursues the protagonist throughout the narrative. He is 41 years old at the time of the narrative's events, and this fact, among others, cause the community to point the finger at the protagonist for breaking up this character's marriage...
