· In the Prologue on Saturday, April 26, 1986, at 4:16 p.m. at the Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station in Ukraine, Senior Lieutenant Alexander Logachev of the Kiev District Civil Defense Force and his men approached the Chernobyl nuclear site.
· He led a column of more than 30 vehicles summoned to an emergency at the plant.
· When they passed the concrete signpost marking the power station grounds, he gave orders to stop and logged their readings: 51 roentgen per hour.
· When they saw the 20-story building of the plant, it was torn open and the upper levels blacked and collapsed into rubble.
· Steam drifted from the wreckage.
· The readings kept rising to 250 roentgen an hour and then 2,080 roentgen an hour.
· Logachev struggled to remain calm and remember the textbook instructions.
