A day in the life of a Victorian woman

Pretend that you are a woman living in Middlemarch. Write a diary entry describing what you did today. Be sure to specify whether you are married, and if so, what your husband does for work, as these details would have a large impact on what your day-to-day life entailed.

Victorian costumes

Find pictures of Victorian clothing, either online or in print. If possible, print/copy them and post them around the classroom.

Pop quiz

Have each student write down a question and answer on a small piece of paper. It can be about the text, the setting, the characters, anything relating to the novel. Collect the questions, then divide the class into two teams. Go through the questions, alternating teams. Each correct answer scores one point.
