Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-3)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the beginning of Mexican Gothic in order to identify the main characters, the setting, and any potential conflicts and themes the novel might contain.
The beginning of the novel introduces the reader to Noemí, her cousin Catalina, and the Doyle family. The reader is also introduced to the main setting of High Place. The reader is introduced to themes involving racial and cultural exploitation, colonialism, and deceptive appearances. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Noemí’s conflict with Virgil and Florence.
