Chapter 1

• The novel begins with a description of parties held at the Tuñóns’ house; these parties, which were often costume parties, frequently went quite late.
• During one such party, however, a young man and woman left the party hours early, at 10 p.m.
• The young man, whose name was Hugo Duarte, had worn a papier-mâché horse head, which he then needed to carry through the streets as he and his date, Noemí Taboada, made their way home.
• Noemí had originally planned to attend the party as a jockey, but she had changed her mind at the last minute upon discovering the costume was uncomfortable.
• Hugo and Noemí walked until they were able to hail a taxi, which took Noemí home.
• Noemí immediately went to speak...
