Lesson 1 (from Prologue)

Objective

Prologue

The objective of this lesson is to explore the use of a prologue to set-up the plot and themes of a novel.

Lesson

1. Jodi Picoult often uses a prologue to introduce her novels. Discuss as a class what a prologue is and how Picoult uses it to ease the reader into the difficult topic of her novel.

2. Break into groups and discuss what could be the parallel between the husband previously telling the wife his gift was fragile and the events of the prologue. What was the husband referring to? What does the wife remember about this conversation? How has her perception of the conversation changed?

3. Write a list of possible themes apparent from the first small scene in the prologue. What actions/events do you base these themes on?

Homework: Write a paragraph predicting what will happen to this couple in the novel.
