Lesson 1 (from The Undefeated)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to explore how and why Hemingway depicts Manuel Garcia as the central character in "The Undefeated." Students will identify and analyze the specific techniques that Hemingway uses in characterizing Manuel.

Group Discussion: What specific adjectives or phrases does Hemingway use to describe Manuel? How does Hemingway use diction and descriptions of character behavior to depict Manuel? How does Manuel compare to the other bull fighters? What do Retana and the other bull fighters think of Manuel? Are their opinions justified?
Small Group Activity: Identify 5 places in the story where Hemingway describes Manuel (either through overt adjectives or subtle suggestions of his behavior or the reaction from others). Be sure to identify whether Hemingway uses specific words (diction) or specific behaviors (actions) to create Manuel.
