1. How does Joan describe the house her grandfather built?

Joan compares the house to a cat napping in the shade of plum trees. The house seems large and small to her at the same time. There is a long driveway the length of the yard that is cut in half by a folding wooden barn gate. Wide stone steps lead to a front porch covered in heavy green ivy, honeysuckle, and morning glory. Above the porch is a wooden pergola. The front door is made of wood and painted yellow.

2. Who is Derek, and what does Joan remember about him?

Derek is the 15-year-old son of August, and Joan's cousin. Joan recognizes him and she remembers what he did to her. She remembers how he held her down on the floor of his bedroom seven years before and raped her when she was three.
