Lesson 1 (from Part 1: Chapter 1-6)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the points of view in Chapters 1-7, and how these perspectives influence the story. Different characters are used to tell the story. Stringfellow uses the first-person point of view for sections told from Joan's points of view and the third-person from other characters' perspectives. In the first six chapters of Memphis: A Novel, these characters are focus characters: Joan, Miriam, and August.

Class discussion: In Chapters 1-6, how does Stringfellow reveal who the narrator is in a chapter? Is everything that happens told from the narrator's point of view? Does anyone else tell the story in a chapter? What do the narrators reveal about themselves and other characters? Do readers know what characters are thinking or do they have to guess the character's thoughts? What does the narrator in a chapter seem to know about the characters...
