Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 60))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Ben's and Mitsuko's relationship in Part I. Ben feels intensely uncomfortable around Mitsuko, his boyfriend Mike's mother, because he is meeting her for the first time and Mike leaves the two of them living in the same apartment almost immediately afterwards, when Mike flies to Japan to be with his estranged, dying father. Eventually, by the end of Part I, Ben and Mitsuko are beginning to at least do a few things together, mostly in the kitchen, with Mitsuko teaching Ben a few dishes and techniques. Ben also sense that Mitsuko is not entirely comfortable with her son Mike being gay.
