Students may or may not have a clear understanding of the historical identities of Emperor Hadrian and other important figures in this book. Also, students may not be able to set the book in the appropriate historical time period. In this lesson, prior to beginning "Animula Vagula Blandula," students will complete some research in order to establish a context for the book.

1) Class Discussion: Do students know who Emperor Hadrian was? What about Trajan and Marcus Aurelius? During what time period of the Roman Empire does this book take place? What do students already know about life in the Roman Empire? What kind of responsibility did the emperor of Rome have? How was the government set up? What sorts of activities did Roman citizens enjoy?
