Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Why was Mark Twain traveling to Hawaii? What newspaper was he writing for at the time? Did Twain seem excited to visit the islands? Why or why not? What are the two main goals that Twain had in writing his letters about Hawaii? Why was it important that he entertained the readers as well as delivered information?

2) Writing and Analysis: Have the class take fifteen minutes and write down three ways that Twain provided an entertaining and informative account of his trip to Hawaii. Afterward, talk about the answers and how Twain used his writing skills to achieve both tasks.
