These objects symbolize the intention to persevere. When Julia enters her office on the first business day after her court appearance, she sees these objects and thinks about how she will not stop ordering them, if for no other reason than to present to the outside world her intention to continue with life in a normal and happy fashion despite the tremendous amount of struggle she is currently experiencing.

Treadmill

This object symbolizes the use of a coping mechanism. When Julia is anxious, she realizes that she uses this object too often and that as a result, she is losing weight she cannot afford to lose. However, she is unable to keep herself from running to this source of comfort during the media circus within which she has lived for one year prior to the novel's depicted events.
