Chapters 1 & 2

· Chapter 1 begins on page 3.
· The story opens with Hazel’s father who had just received a “life-size woman doll...designed to provide a sexual experience” (3).
· The doll was shipped in a pine box not unlike a coffin.
· Hazel is in her father’s home staring at the crate when her father rolls up behind her in his “Rascal mobility scooter” (3).
· Hazel had recently left her husband and needed a place to stay.
· She notes that she could fit inside the crate and potentially sleep in it.
· She finds herself thinking of whether or not she could sleep inside random spaces more and more since leaving her husband, Byron.
· Byron’s house was filled with electronic devices as he “had founded and built a technologies empire” (4).
