Lesson 1 (from Book One: Chapter 1 - 3)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to have students describe the relationship between the character William and his family, specifically his first wife, mother, and half-sister. In Book 1: Chapter 1, the narrator discusses her first husband, William. Students will be able to analyze the introduction to this character and his relationships with his mom, half-sister, and first wife.
Lesson
Class Discussion: How would you describe the relationship between William and the narrator? What circumstances led to William and the narrator seeing each other more frequently? How did William find out about his half-sister? What impact did this discovery have on him?
Small Group Activity: In small groups, discuss the introduction of William's mother in the text in Book 1: Chapter 1. In what ways did the trip to Maine reveal surprising information about William's mother? Reflecting on the text, what do you think the author means by "unbelievable poverty...
