• In Book One: Chapter 1, the novel introduces the protagonist, Lucy.

• Lucy's first husband, William, informs her that he has discovered a half-sister in Maine named Lois Bubar.

• However, when they went to meet her, Lois refuses to meet William, which upsets him.

• During their trip to Maine, they also uncover unsettling information about William's mother's impoverished background.

• Following these revelations, William asks Lucy to accompany him on a trip to Grand Cayman.

• Though initially hesitant, Lucy agrees and they spend three days there.

• Upon returning to New York, Lucy misses both William and her deceased second husband, David.
