• Each chapter follows a different character using a third-person omniscient narrator; the first chapter follows the protagonist, Atticus Turner.
• In 1954, Atticus, a 22 year-old Black man, drove from Jacksonville, Florida to Chicago, Illinois.
• His travels were beset with difficulties worsened by the racism of those he encountered.
• While traveling, Atticus referred to The Safe Negro Travel Guide, which helped him find places to sleep and eat.
• Upon passing into Indiana, one of his car’s tires went flat; Atticus was dismayed to find the spare tire was also flat.
• Atticus grabbed The Safe Negro Travel Guide and walked to find a garage that could help him.
• Unfortunately, the first garage he encountered was flying the Confederate flag; nevertheless, he decided to try his luck...
