Objective

Objective: Part 1 (through page 50)-The beginning of the book starts off with a huge gathering for many generations for a family reunion. Not only does this reunion help introduce many characters, it also helps create a frame for the story to follow later on. This lesson will discuss the role of the family reunion in the book.

1. Group Activity: Have the class split into groups of four and create a list of all the descriptions given in regards to the family reunion. Afterward, have each group share their findings with the rest of class.

2. Class Discussion: How is the family reunion described in the book? What purpose does this reunion seem to serve in the book? What does the reunion represent to the members of the family attending it? What is the possibility that the family reunion will help to drive the story forward in the future...
