Ralph

This is the first character introduced in the novel. He is clearly one of those boys at school who is popular and does not feel the need to be kind to anyone. However, he is also a natural leader, and when a leader is chosen, it is this character that is voted on.

Jack Merridew

This character is the leader of the choir boys who were on board the plane. He jumps at the opportunity to lead his choir as a group of hunters and is also quick to volunteer to keep the signal fire going. He later leaves the main group, taking most of the older boys with him.

Piggy

This character is a fat boy who wears glasses and who has been told he suffers from asthma. He refuses to do any of the physical work on the island, but he has lots of ideas...
