Objective

In Chapter 1, Covenant is given a note by the boy that has only one word on it "Beware." This one word seems to indicate many things to Covenant. The objective of this lesson is to look at deeper meanings within a single word.

Lesson

1) Discussion: Why did the author chose to put only a single word on the sign that the boy gave to Covenant? What word other than 'beware' could have been used without changing the effect? Explain your choice.

2) Classwork: Write down several words on individual pieces of paper and hand one to each student in the class. Have the student open the paper and immediately begin writing about what comes to mind simply by looking at the word. It can be any word such as Hunger or Freedom. It can be a tangible object or something intangible. Have the students speculate, or explain...
