Objective

The objective of this lesson is to have students understand the different non-fiction genres and understand why Nelson chooses autobiography as his genre.

Nelson's autobiography is over 600 pages. It includes a wide variety of details about not just Nelson's personal life, but the historical and political events that were happening during his lifetime. While many authors choose memoir to tell about a particular section of their life, Nelson chooses to tell the story of his entire life, thus selecting the genre of autobiography for his book.

Understanding Definitions: Teacher will give students the definitions of memoir and autobiography. Have students brainstorm reasons why memoir is a good choice for an author. Have students brainstorm reasons why autobiography is a good choice for an author. Have students brainstorm the pros and cons of each genre.
