Objective
Objective: The Little Foxes is a story of greed set during the industrialization of the post-Civil War South. It is interesting to note that the playwright, Lillian Hellman, was born in the South and lived half her life there until moving to New York at age 16. Before studying the play, students will study the author. Today's lesson will focus on the author, giving students an opportunity to have special insight into Hellman's own views and experiences when she wrote the play.
1) Small group activity: Break the class into groups of three or four, creating enough groups to research these topics: the author's childhood, education, writings, marriages and relationships, and prizes and awards. Have each group share their information with the class. Each group prepares its information to present to the class for discussion.
