Chapter I

The dedication of the book to Leon Werth is one of the most well-known dedications in literature. We will focus on the dedication and on the historical context the author was writing from, World War II. The objective of this first lesson is to provide the context in which the book was written.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion: What was happening in the world in 1943 when the book was published? Leon Werth was living in France where the author, Antoine de Saint Exupery, writes "he is hungry and cold." What was the situation in France that had created this kind of suffering? Is it important to understand what is happening in the world of an author in order to comprehend the book? Can literature ever be timeless or is it always influenced by the events and situation in which the author finds him/herself?
