Objective
In Part 1, Chapters 1-7, Vidal does not provide much background information on Abraham Lincoln prior to his coming to Washington early in 1861. The objective of this lesson is to learn more about Abraham Lincoln as a man before becoming President of the United States.

Lead the class in a discussion about Abraham Lincoln. What did the students know about Abraham Lincoln before reading this book? What do they know about Abraham Lincoln now? Why was Abraham Lincoln destined for greatness? What were Lincoln's character traits that would make him a great man? Do the students think Lincoln was a great visionary, leader, or both?
Divide the class into small groups and have them research more about Abraham Lincoln's life prior to his becoming President of the United States. Have them prepare PowerPoint presentations to be shared with the rest of the class to compare and...
