Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Spufford's description of the bombing and its immediate aftermath in the first chapter of this novel. In 1944, a German bomb destroys a Woolworth's department store and the surrounding area, killing scores of people, including the children who become the five main characters in the book. Spufford uses graphic language to describe the bomb itself, its intense destruction, and its aftermath.
