Objective
In fiction, literary works are classified according to genre, such as fantasy, mystery, romance, etc. "Life on the Outside" is described as narrative nonfiction. The objective of this lesson is to learn about narrative nonfiction.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: In what ways are nonfiction works classified? What elements in the prologue of "Life on the Outside" classify it as narrative nonfiction? Be specific.
2) Small Group Discussion: Divide the students into groups of three or four. Have the students discuss various ways that "Life on the Outside" could be classified. If you worked in a bookstore or a library, in what section do you think this book would belong?
3) Individual Writing: Have students write a paragraph describing what narrative nonfiction is and what elements make up narrative nonfiction. Using this information, students should find elements in the prologue that identify the work as narrative nonfiction.
