Lesson 1 (from Part I (Liberation Day ))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze the significance Saunders places on memory in the story "Liberation Day." In this story, Jeremy and the other "Speakers" have consented to have their memories completely wiped of the people and relationships they had before becoming Speakers. Now, they work for the Untermeyer family essentially as imprisoned people who have no sense that they have existed before their contract with the Untermeyers.
Lesson
Class Discussion: How does Saunders reveal the backgrounds of Jeremy, Lauren, and Craig? Why can none of these Speakers remember their lives before they became Speakers? What happens when the Speakers do start to remember their pasts?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to answer the following question in a writing exercise: Who is the first person to bring up the subject of the Speakers...
