Lesson 1 (from Less At First)
Objective
Students will analyze how Greer brings together elements within the exposition stage of Less to set up a complex world that will serve multiple functions as the narrative progresses.
The novel opens with Arthur sitting in a hotel lobby waiting for his literary escort to arrive and to take him to his first literary event in a trip around the world. Because the entirety of the novel is focused on the events of Arthur's trip, combined with flashbacks from his previous relationships, the author must communicate to the reader a plethora of information in the exposition phase, including why Arthur is embarking on the trip, his planned itinerary, the events happening back in San Francisco that are currently plaguing his mind, his history as a minor literary figure, and so on.
