Objective
Students will consider the qualities that characterized Florence, Italy during the Renaissance and will consider how one's location can affect personal development, personal contentment and inspiration.
Walter Isaacson opens the first chapter of his biography of Leonardo da Vinci by painting a vivid portrait of what life was like in Renaissance Italy, particularly in Florence, which was the artistic center of Europe at the time and the place in which Leonardo spent much of his time during two significant periods of his life. Prior to Friar Savonarola's arrival and deposition of the Medici family, the city was a mecca for artistry, imagination, fashion, and creativity. A main theme of the biography is that the unique location and era in which one lives shapes one's life experiences and achievements.
